Description

WHO?

Maximin Grünhaus has a history of viticulture dating from the Roman times. It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Maximin, a Benedictine monastery which owned the land from the 7th to 18th century. Since late 19th century, the estate is now overseen by Carl von Schubert, who represents the fifth generation taking care of the vineyards. The classically Germanic labels of this great estate have always excited us, promising and delivering stunning Mosel Rieslings.

WHERE?

Located on steep, south-facing slopes 2 km from where the Ruwer river meets the Mosel is situated the estate of Maximin Grünhaus. The ‘Monopol’ Riesling is a blend from two prestigious vineyards: Herrenberg and Abtsberg. Both vineyards are south facing providing optimal sun exposure, however, they vary in soil type. The vines of the Abtsberg grow on blue Devonian slate, while the Herrenberg site is dominated by red Devonian slate. The vineyards are classified as VDP Grosse Lage.

WHY?

As the name suggests, the term “Monopol” refers to the fact that all of the Maximin Grünhaus vineyards are wholly owned by the von Schubert family. It is made in the “trocken” style, perfectly capturing the exotic fruit, stunning minerality and vibrant acidity that are classic characteristics of the Grünhaus estate. It is likely the only Gutswein in Germany made from grapes harvested exclusively from grand cru sites.
