Description

WHO?

Martín Códax is a modern and dynamic co-operative and the largest producer in Galicia. They are Albariño specialist. It was founded in 1986 by 50 families and has since grown to over 550 members. The co-operative was named Martín Códax after the medieval poet and minstrel who lived in Galicia. The co-operative was instrumental in the creation of the Rías Baixas DO in 1988 and has championed the Albariño variety, now the most widely planted in the region.

WHERE?

The vineyards are primarily in the Salnés Valley, an average of five kilometres from the sea, ensuring the warm days are moderated by cool nights. The warm temperatures give ripeness and full citrus and apricot fruit, while the colder temperatures at night ensure fresh, pure Albariño aromatics. The soils are granitic and the vines are trained on a traditional horizontal trellis system known as ‘Emparrado’.

WHY?

It has beautiful yellow colour with green hints. In the nose, aromas of apple and ripe citric fruits (mandarin and lemon) alongside white flowers (mimosa and orange blossom) blend in with herbaceous hints of hay and fennel, rounding off a charming, and discretely balsamic, almost minty. Enveloping, fresh and creamy in the mouth, it has a long finish with elegant mineral aromas appearing which may remind us of talcum and salt, and bring character and lightness to the wine.
