Description

WHO?

Charles Back was a pioneer in the Swartland when he started Spice Route in 1998. “Without [Charles]…the Swartland would still be regarded as a rural backwater” wrote Tim Atkin. Today, the region is the source of many of South Africa’s outstanding wines, yet Spice Route remains one of the best and most credible producers in the region, due largely to the fact that they own their own vineyards. Winemaker Charl du Plessis has been with Charles for 15 years, and knows the region intimately.

WHERE?

Spice Route’s 100 ha of vineyards are situated in Malmesbury and Darling. Their signature wine style in the rolling hills along the Cape’s West Coast, where unirrigated vines produce grapes with small thick skinned berries – ripe fruit that is dense, rich and full flavoured. A passionate dedication to exceptional quality and traditional hand crafting captures the essence of this fruit in the wines of the Spice Route.

WHY?

Pinotage (a cross between Cinsaut and Pinot Noir) is South Africa’s signature grape variety and truly at home in the Swartland. It boasts with playful nose of ripe plum and raspberry aromas which are accompanied by hints of beetroot and sweet spice that create interest. The lively red fruit profile of the nose follows through seamlessly on to the palate, where it is supported by a firmly structured tannic backbone. Its fuller body displays a refined texture with soft smoked cherry finish.
