Phil Sexton, he founder and owner of Giant Steps, named his Yarra Valley winery after the John Coltrane album of that name. It also recognizes the giant step he made when he sold his winery in Margaret River to move to Victoria. Head winemaker Steve Flamsteed and his team aim is to express in each wine the character of the site, grape and vintage, and this they achieve by meticulous work in the vineyard and minimum intervention in the winery.
With a history spanning over 175 years, there’s no doubt that Yarra Valley is one of Australia’s most celebrated cool climate wine regions and Victoria’s first wine growing district. The wines are produced using indigenous yeasts, gravity-flow winemaking, and minimal fining and filtration. The Sexton vineyard is in the heart of the Yarra Valley where yields are naturally low which leads to intense and concentrated wines. Biodynamic management principles are introduced from the begining.
The Giant Steps Single Vineyard releases are one of the most impressive explorations of the influence of site that Australian wine has seen in recent memory. In case of Pinot Noir, one clone (MV6), one region (Yarra Valley) and one epic winemaker (Steve Flamsteed). One unbelievable wine to try with very limited edition. The Sexton Vineyard is in one of the most revered pockets of the Valley. Take a bow Steve Flamsteed and team, these wine is a remarkable achievement.
