Balnaves is a shining jewel in the crown of Coonawarra. A family-owned winery established in the early 1970s, Balnaves is one of the few fully independent wine businesses in the region. “Grapegrower, viticultural consultant and vigneron, Doug Balnaves has over 48ha of high quality estate vineyards. Their aim is to produce consistently high quality wines from fruit sourced from their own Coonawarra vineyards, reflecting the unique flavours, character and quality of fruit grown in this area.
Vineyards are situated at the southern end of the famous Coonawarra ‘Terra Rossa’ strip (the famous rust-coloured, iron-rich soils) and Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 70% of the planted area. The vineyard is divided into small blocks of between one and two hectares. The quality of wine produced from these small blocks is evaluated each year and recorded. For Balnaves, this practice proves the effect that microclimate and geological features have on the quality of the wine produced.
Coonawarra at its best. If you looked up Coonawarra Cabernet in the dictionary, there could well be a picture of this wine cut and pasted in. The Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon shows everything that has made this region so famous. It’s powerful yet composed, seductive, yet authoritative, it’s a wine destined for a big future and further evolution in the bottle. 2012 has been hailed by winegrowers and critics as a vintage to collect.
