WHO?
Maximin Grünhaus is a renowned winery with an exceptionally rich history, with records of vine cultivation dating back to Roman times. The name originates from the Abbey of St. Maximin, a Benedictine monastery whose land was owned by the estate from the 7th to the 18th century. Since the late 19th century, the estate has been owned by the Schubert family, with Carl von Schubert being the current head, representing the fifth generation. The traditional labels of this famous winery faithfully reflect the contents of the bottle; a deep connection to the region, grape varieties, and winemakers.
WHERE?
Maximin Grünhaus is located on steep, southern slopes just 2 km from the point where the Ruwer River flows into the Moselle. Wines of the Ortswein (village) rank come from two prestigious vineyards, Abtsberg and Herrenberg, which are fully owned by the Schubert family and classified as VDP.Grosse Lage. Both vineyards have southern exposures, allowing for optimal sun exposure and ensuring a harvest of ideally ripe and balanced grapes year after year. Grünhäuser Riesling comes from vines at least 35 years old, mostly from the Abtsberg vineyard. The slope of the terrain reaches up to 75%, with soil predominantly shallow but richer in marine fossils than the red shale dominant in the neighboring Herrenberg vineyard. All this provides the final wines with exceptional tension on the palate and remarkable minerality.
WHY?
All handpicked, with slate terraces, very typical of the Ruwer. The Schloss Kabinett is fresh fun for everyday drinking, while the single-vineyard Kabinett becomes a bit more mature and complex.
