WHO?
Vigneti del Salento is owned by the Farnese group, while I Muri is their endeavor in Puglia. Winemaker Filippo Baccalaro is the gray eminence behind this label. As a native of Piedmont who has been working in Puglia for 20 years, Filippo was fascinated by the generous aromas found in the local grapes. With minimal intervention in technology but with a wealth of practical knowledge, he masterfully transfers the essence of the terroir into the glass.
WHERE?
Puglia is located in the southeastern part of Italy. This hot and dry region is cooled by sea breezes. The vineyards are located in the province of Taranto, especially in the municipalities of Manduria and Sava. The yield is much lower than potential, ensuring the best quality of carefully selected grapes. The red soil is interspersed with limestone clay rich in iron and minerals. 80% of the grapes come from old bush-trained vines aged at least 20 years.
WHY?
Primitivo is synonymous with California Zinfandel, but more importantly, it is also known as Crljenak Kaštelanski or Tribidrag, and is one of the parents of Plavac Mali. It is dark ruby in color with a purple hue. Full-bodied with plenty of dark ripe and juicy fruit, almost sweet and rounded tannins, and a creamy texture. Notes of cigar box, cocoa, and sweet spices culminate in a long finish. The price is almost symbolic.
