WHO?
Rufina is the smallest of all the Chianti zones but also convincingly one of the most authentic. The cold winds that blow down the Sieve valley ensure finesse and definition in the wines, a quality few producers in Chianti Classico can match. Selvapiana is a classic Tuscan estate in the heart of Chianti Rufina. Its original purpose was to serve as a summer residence for the bishops of Florence. Since 1957, it has been owned by Mr. Giuntini Masseti, who tirelessly works on restoring the reputation of Chianti Rufina.
WHERE?
Although the smallest in size, Rufina produces some of the most magical Chiantis. Its ultimate expression of Sangiovese grape is found in the famous Bucerchiale vineyard. The oldest parts of the vineyard were planted back in 1968, and they face south to southwest at 150-200 meters above sea level. Rufina’s soil consists of the renowned galestro gravel mixed with limestone and clay, which, along with its proximity to the Apennines, provides a specific microclimate for late grape ripening and inherent freshness.
WHY?
Bucerchiale comes from the eponymous 12.5-hectare vineyard, consistently yielding perfectly ripened Sangiovese grapes. There’s no rush in crafting this masterpiece, allowing time and natural processes to express the quintessence of the sublime terroir in the glass. It’s only produced in the best vintages and exclusively as a riserva. Oak is present but only to further accentuate the captivating character of Sangiovese.
