WHO?
Château de Chambert is owned by Philippe Lejeune, who successfully runs the estate with the help of consulting oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt. Together, they manage over 65 hectares of vineyards located in some of the best terroirs at the highest positions in the Cahors appellation in southwestern France. Malbec, locally known as Côt Noir or Auxerrois, is the predominant grape variety, making up 80% of the vineyard, with Merlot comprising the remaining 20%.
WHERE?
Château de Chambert is located 30 kilometers west of the city of Cahors, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. This unique climate becomes particularly evident during the harvest season when hot winds from Africa aid in the ripening of the grapes. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of around 300 meters, with vines averaging 30 years of age. The specific soil composition gives these wines an enviable mineral definition, underscored by elegant freshness.
WHY?
Château de Chambert is the historic wine of the eponymous estate, a blend of 85% Malbec and 15% Merlot. Here, Merlot serves as a moderator to the monolithic nature of Malbec, adding a touch of red berry fruit. The wine is a deep purple color, opulent, with a strong structure and intense dark fruit. Elegance and minerality in the long finish suggest exceptional aging potential. It is among the best wines of Cahors.
