WHO?
The Fantini Group was born in the small town of Ortona, in the Abruzzo region, in the heart of the Mediterranean. Established in 1994 by three partners – Filippo, Valentino, and Camillo, also known as the “three dreamers” because they were always capable of realizing their dreams no matter how impossible they seemed, in order to create today’s flagship of Southern Italian wines. Right here is where the largest Italian “boutique winery” was created, implying maximum dedication to details starting from the vineyards.
WHERE?
The vineyards are located in the hills of Irpinia in Campania, between 450 and 550 meters above sea level. Despite the southern geographical latitude, thanks to the large temperature range between day and night, the harvest is one of the latest in Italy. The grapes for this wine come from vines older than 100 years in the province of Avellino. Here, Aglianico has merged with the local soil and landscape, producing unique wines. Throughout the growing season, the vines are refreshed by cool breezes blowing from the Gulf of Naples, carrying volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius, which gives the local wines an unmistakable terroir stamp.
WHY?
The name Vesevo is a historical name for Vesuvius. Taurasi, a small town located 90 km east of Naples at the foot of the Apennines, is considered the “Barolo of the South”. Partly because both famous wines have strong, massive tannins, and partly because only the local mountainous area resembles the Langhe hills (in terms of climate, soil composition, and vegetation) in Piedmont. Taurasi is produced from the indigenous Aglianico variety and, like the aforementioned Barolo, has the potential to develop in the bottle for 20 years or more. A wine of monumental power and an “endless” aging potential.
